Subject: MedWatch - Tamiflu (oseltamivir) associated with neuropsychiatric events, including delirium and abnormal behavior leading to injury

MedWatch logo MedWatch - The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program

Roche and FDA informed healthcare professionals of neuropsychiatric events associated with the use of Tamiflu, in patients with influenza. These symptoms, as described in post marketing reports mostly from Japan, include delirium and abnormal behavior leading to injury, and in some cases resulting in fatal outcomes. These events were reported primarily among pediatric patients and often had an abrupt onset and rapid resolution. Patients with influenza should be closely monitored for signs of abnormal behavior. If neuropsychiatric symptoms occur, the risks and benefits of continuing treatment should be evaluated.

Subject: FDA MedWatch -Aspire36 and Aspire Lite -Nationwide Recall Of Dietary Supplements Because Products Contained an Analog Of Sildenafil

MedWatch logo MedWatch - The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program

Palo Alto Labs and FDA notified consumers and healthcare professionals of a voluntary nationwide recall of two dietary supplements, Aspire36 and Aspire Lite. The products were recalled because they were found to contain Aildenafil in trace amounts and Dimethyl sildenafil thione, an analog of Sildenafil, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. The presence of these ingredients in the dietary supplements may pose a threat to consumers because the analogue may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Consumers who have Aspire36 and Aspire Lite in their possession should stop using the products and return any unused product to the place of purchase.

Gorton's Seafood, based in Gloucester, Mass., is voluntarily recalling one frozen seafood product with a specific date code because the product may have been adulterated with pills. While there has been only one isolated case of adulteration and no reports of illness from the product, the company is taking this action as a precautionary measure.

Actavis Recalls Remaining Fentanyl Patches in the US as Precaution (Mar. 1)
Sun, 2 Mar 2008 15:21:00 -0600

This recall is an expansion of the Company's initial recall of fourteen lots of Fentanyl transdermal patches announced on February 17, 2008. That recall was due to the identification of a possible fold-over defect present in the product that potentially could cause leakage of the fentanyl gel. The remaining lots of Fentanyl transdermal system patches are being recalled as a precautionary measure because Actavis lacks assurance that all patches are free from defects.

Palo Alto Labs Issues a Voluntary Nationwide Recall of Aspire36 and Aspire Lite, two Products Marketed as Dietary Supplements (Feb. 28)
Fri, 29 Feb 2008 12:33:00 -0600

Palo Alto Labs is conducting a voluntary nationwide recall of the company's supplement products sold under the name Aspire36 and Aspire Lite. Palo Alto Labs is conducting this recall after being informed by representatives of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that lab analysis by FDA of Aspire36 and Aspire Lite samples found that the products contained Aildenafil in trace amounts and Dimethyl sildenafil thione (sulfoaildenafil) a purported analog of Sildenafil, an FDA-approved drug used as treatment for male Erectile Dysfunction (ED).

Subject: FDA MedWatch- Spiriva (tiotropium bromide inhalation powder) & Foradil (formoterol fumarate inhalation powder) Capsules- Correct Use Of The Products

MedWatch logo MedWatch - The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program

FDA informed healthcare professionals and consumers of the correct way to use Spiriva and Foradil inhalation powder capsules. FDA and the National Poison Control Center have received many reports of patients swallowing Spiriva and Foradil capsules rather than placing the capsules in the inhalation devices. Both products are to be used in the HandiHaler (Spiriva) and Aerolizer (Foradil) devices to deliver the medicine to the lungs to improve breathing in patients with asthma, and in individuals affected by chronic obstructive lung disease and bronchitis. Both products will not treat a patient's breathing condition if the contents of a capsule are swallowed rather than inhaled. Healthcare professionals should discuss with patients how to correctly use the Spiriva HandiHaler or Foradil Aerolizer. See the Public Health Advisory for important information on the correct use of both products.
